For future reference…

This is my advice to any future students of DS106!

  •  Do NOT procrastinate!!! EVER! You will regret it if you do.
  • Try and complete the daily creates right when you get a new weeks worth of assignments. It’s more stressful putting them off last minute.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Tweeting and Professor Bonds were my lifelines when I was confused.
  • Comment, comment, comment! You may not understand now but you will eventually.
  • Google is your friend and so is the DS106 handbook. If there is a tutorial – WATCH IT!

This class was a boat load of work but it was enjoyable. Some days were more frustrating than others but DO NOT GIVE UP. You will get it eventually and then you will be super proud of the outcome! Also it doesn’t help to have updated technology – my dinosaur laptop was not a fan of this class, but I was! The HCC was also my favorite go-to when my laptop didn’t want to cooperate. It’s actually pretty bittersweet once you’re done with everything. You’ll learn to love this class, trust me!

This is Sally.

Howdy everyone! My name is Sally “Shot” Winderson and I am going to tell you the story about how I became a Gal of the East through the reasons why I love this place. Well if you ever read my tiny little background at the very beginning of this semester I said I was born in the heat of 1845… well that’s just not true! I was actually born in the heat of 1995 but the rest of me is true! I lived in Tombstone, Arizona my whole life, up until recently, and had a Mom, Dad, and 6 brothers. I was indeed made fun of when I was younger for acting too much like a boy and I do pour a pretty mean whiskey and worked at Tumbleweed Saloon pretty much all my life. I lived in a small cramped flat just above the saloon with my family until I was about 16 and could afford to rent a room across the street. My family thought that I was betraying them by moving out but living with 8 other people was just too much. When I turned 19 I bought a plane ticket east and set out on my journey. I remember the day I was leaving so clearly. It was 6am, the airport was an hour away and my entire family wanted to take me. Our car was too small at the time so my parents drove me and my brothers stayed home to work. I gave each of them a bear hug and told them that I’d send them a ticket once I hit the jackpot. They all laughed and said “Sure ya will Shot, eryone will love ya out there!” Before I got in the car I looked at myself in the mirror. Decked out in dirt covered jeans, worn in boots and a what-once-was-white-now-brown t-shirt. My hair was all frizzy and wild and my scar on my chin from falling when I was seven was as taught as ever. My freckles were coming out of hiding due to being in the sun too long and I was also a little sunburnt. My Mom called from the car and I knew it was time to go. Saying goodbye to my parents was the hardest. I thought moving into a room across the street was harder but this was worse. I was going to a place where I knew no one and had no knowledge of what would await me. I gave them both a hug and kiss and was on my way. That was a year ago today, with a stroke of fortunate events I now attend the University of Mary Washington and am getting my degree to be a school guidance counselor. Every morning when I wake up I see a glimpse of the old me, the freckles, the scar, the frizzy hair. But when I go to class or work I am a new more refined me. I am happy. My hair is sleek and straight, my freckles and scar in hiding and I wear a nice blazer and jeans sometimes if my t-shirt doesn’t cut it. I have never been happier and I want to show you all the reasons why thanks to Virginia and UMW!

Why I Left Tombstone – Created with Haiku Deck, presentation software that inspires

Another reason I love where I live now is the weather! In Tombstone it was always hot and dry and was just not pleasant to go out in. Here, I get all four seasons!

The collage below is not just from UMW and VA but also from travels I have had while attending the school. New York City and Broadway were both where I traveled to during New Years. The black and white “gangster” photo was from spring break when I attended the Arnold Sports and Fitness Expo in Ohio. The picture with me and a friend in snow as well as the one with the time slightly showing, is showing how I have made new friendships on campus. The hiking picture was from a weekend I went up north to go hiking. Not only do I love the east but I have the ability to travel and make friends and that is something I am so happy about!

While also being able to travel all over I finally can call a room of my own home. The one I live in at school changes frequently but I finally have a place up in Northern Virginia that I can call my own! It’s much more spacious than the little flat I bought when I was 16!

My Home on the East Coast! – Created with Haiku Deck, presentation software that inspires

Since growing up in a small western town was pretty boring, living out here is wonderful. I showed you all the reasons why through different forms of media I learned this year. And here is me, Sally Winderson, signing off on this wild rodeo called DS106.

Sally: The Gal of the East

Throughout this entire semester my character Sally has told you her stories of the West as well as of the East. For this final project I will be telling her story of why she is now officially a Gal of the East. She loves the West and will always have fond memories of it but she see’s the East coast as her home. I will be writing about her past in more detail and how she has changed overtime (her physical appearance as well as mental health). I will then use visual and combine a photo set of 5 photos as to why she left and 5 photos as to why she loves the East. I will make a collage of her new life as well as give everyone a tour of her home all combined in another photo set. Which will also lead into another reason she loves the east – the weather. She may just video how great it is. Then I will end it with the sounds of her day as well as a phone call with her family and their great news via audio. I based a majority of this off of assignments, but will add my own little flair here and there, and it added up to be 25+ stars of work as required. You’ve seen Sally talk about her new life but never like this.

Weekly Summary 4/8/16 – 4/15/16

This week was all about web assignments and I had! But before I get into that, daily creates! This week was different though because we had to make a story and use our daily creates within that so they are all combined into one marvelous post!

The required assignment of the week was to do Storytelling Within the Web. This was a lot of fun for me and I ramble on more about how I loved using the Goggles and my love for Supernatural so that’s an interesting post.

Then we were required to do 10 stars worth of web assignments. The first one that I did was create a BuzzFeed Quiz for 4.5 stars. This assignment was actually the hardest one I had to do and took up a lot of time. I almost gave up on it but I didn’t, so please go take that quiz! The second assignment I did was create a resume for my character Sally. It was worth 3 stars and I really had fun with this one, probably because it isn’t a resume for myself. The last assignment I did was a little like the required one we were given. I had to use the X Ray goggles and create my own search engine. I pretty much took Google and made it for desperate college kids who keep procrastinating. This was worth 3.5 starts giving me a total of 11 stars at the end. I had a lot of fun this week and even though I’m so over this semester I have been enjoying this class a lot!

How I saved the world…. (The DS106 world that is)

So every week we always have daily creates. This week we were required to do three and then post each of them in one blog post and make a story for them, so here’s my story about the day I, named Tara for the story, saved the DS106 world with the daily creates I did.

It was a wonderful April evening, the birds were chirping, the grill was cooking dinner, and Tara Powerpuff was enjoying a book on the back patio. All the sudden her secret superhero cell phone was ringing and she answered – it was Professor B. He told Tara that an unknown force was causing people to forget what DS106 (only the greatest class on the web) is. Tara hung up the phone and sprang into action!

She drove around and around until she spotted something fishy and found the force terrorizing potential students. She realized it was circle man and that the only way to stop him was with triangles! She quickly took action and formed a weapon so powerful it would stop him dead in his tracks. That weapon was a poster appreciating DS106 with triangles!

She posted it everywhere! All over social media, the town, city, state, universe! EVERYWHERE! Circle Man stood no chance, when Tara walked up to him he held his head in shame. He told Tara that he didn’t mean to make people forget, it’s just that he had no time to finish his assignments and showed Tara what his day looked like.

Tara had seen those kinds of days before but said it was no excuse to mess with people’s memories. Circle Man apologized for his behavior and said he would never do it again. He drew himself a manhole before Tara and jumped in, to never return. Tara went back home to realize she had left the grill on and had to deal with that mess. So much for her peaceful evening.

Supernatural Sewing

So for this week the required assignment was to find a web page and make it our own. Or the Storytelling Within the Web assignment. First I had to download the X Ray Goggles which was simple since I use Firefox on the regular. I then went and searched for a CraigsList Ad to mess up and I found an old antique sewing machine that I decided to mess around with! Now I don’t think I have mentioned this before but one of the shows I’ve been watching on Netflix is Supernatural and so I decided to make my new ad based off of the show. If you don’t know anything about the show – long story short – two brothers hunt the supernatural and save the world. I decided to use one of their episodes and pretend it was a haunted antique in that episode. Here’s the IMDb site of that specific episode in case anyone was curious. Basically I used Craigslist, made it Supernaturallist and went from there. This assignment was fun just because I actually got to mess around with a webpage and not be too terribly confuse by code and what not. But without having you all read much longer I give you my new remixed ad in a screenshot and the link below!

Hire Sally!

For this assignment Sally is applying to a job in Fredericksburg, VA. She’s actually applying to be a bartender at Capital Ale! Her resume is a little rough around the edges but she’s surprisingly super smart and active! Here’s to hoping she gets the job. All I did was use Word to produce this resume and posted it below.

This assignment was worth 3 stars.

Help Me

For this assignment I decided to create my own search engine. I used the X-Ray Goggles and remade the Google page. It was pretty complicated because I could not for the life of me figure out how to change the Google logo, so now it’s a dingy little button. But I did have fun changing all the smaller tabs. The search engine is designed for college students who have procrastinated way too much this semester and need a hand in finding answers online. I did like making it though and hope you guys like reading what I changed everything to.

Help ME!

This assignment was worth 3.5 stars.

Find out who you are!

To start off this weeks worth of web assignments I made a BuzzFeed Quiz. I just had to join the community and make the quiz. It took a lot longer than I thought it would since I had to download all the images from Google. Also coming up with a topic was quite a bit of brainstorming but I got it. I did realize that one of my answers didn’t come up so it’s just a picture. It should say “I am if I want to win”.

I have two sisters and I love taking quizzes where I see who I am more like so I made one about us three! Take the quiz below (it’s hyperlinked) and let me know who you got!!!

Take my quiz!

This assignment was worth 4.5 stars.
